Set up IPTV on Apple TV, step by step
You need your welcome email (server URL, username and password) and the Siri Remote. Store listings change, so if an app’s name looks slightly different from ours, that’s normal.
Update tvOS
Settings > System > Software Updates. Older versions sometimes hide newer apps in the store.
Open the App Store
Type Smarters or GSE into the search field. One app is enough to start; the second is a backup.
Choose the Xtream login
The first screen asks how to sign in. Choose the Xtream option (its label differs between apps) so channels, films, series and replay each get a section.
Enter your details
Any name for the profile, then the username, password and server URL exactly as in the email, including http:// and the port number if there is one. Use the on-screen keyboard or dictate with your iPhone.
Let the lineup load
Pulling in tens of thousands of channels plus the guide takes a minute or two on first launch. Leave the remote alone.
Set favorites
Add the channels you watch to Favorites so the remote doesn’t have to scroll the whole list.
Fix the picture settings
Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content: turn on Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. More on why below.

The two settings that make IPTV on Apple TV look right
Out of the box, Apple TV outputs everything at one frame rate, usually 60 per second. US live TV is mostly 60 or 30, but films are 24 and European sport is 50. When the box converts 50 to 60, you get a faint judder on every camera pan, worst on a soccer pitch.
Match Frame Rate makes the Apple TV switch to the content’s own rate. The screen blinks for a second when you change channel; that’s the switch happening. Match Dynamic Range stops the box forcing HDR on standard content, which otherwise looks washed out.
Both settings live under Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content. Two minutes, and the picture is closer to what the broadcaster sent.

Which Apple TV models work well
Any Apple TV 4K handles HD and 4K streams easily. The Apple TV HD works for Full HD but not 4K. One detail people miss: the 64 GB Wi-Fi-only version of the newest Apple TV 4K has no Ethernet port, while the 128 GB version and older 4K models do. For 4K sport, a cable to the router beats Wi-Fi every time.
If you’re on Wi-Fi, make sure the Apple TV is on the 5 GHz band and not behind two walls from the router. Leave about 15 Mbps free for each 4K stream. Our 4K IPTV guide covers which channels are really 4K. The Apple TV article on Wikipedia lists every model and its ports.

Living with a big lineup on the Siri Remote
Dictate, don’t type
Hold the microphone button on the remote, or use the keyboard prompt on your iPhone, to enter the server URL and to search for channels.
Swipe gently
The clickpad scrolls fast. Short flicks move a few channels; a long swipe can fly past a whole group.
Favorites first
Tell the app to launch into Favorites. On a 60,000-channel list nothing else saves as many clicks.
Replay from the guide
On Premium 4K and Lifetime Max, scroll back in the guide to a past program and press play to watch it from catch-up.
TV button behavior
In Settings > Remotes and Devices, set the TV button to open the Home screen, so the IPTV app is one press away.

Apple TV problems and quick fixes
App says the login is invalid
Typo, or a space pasted at the end
Retype the username and password; check http:// and the port in the server URL.
Channels load but films are missing
Account added as a plain playlist URL
Remove that playlist and re-add your account as an Xtream login.
Faint judder on sport
Frame rate isn’t matched
Turn on Match Frame Rate in Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content.
Picture looks grey or washed out
HDR forced on SDR content
Turn on Match Dynamic Range.
Stalls on 4K channels, HD is fine
Apple TV sits two rooms from the router on the slower Wi-Fi band
Run a cable, or watch the HD copy until you can.
App vanished from the home screen
tvOS offloaded it to save space

Can I AirPlay from my iPhone instead?
Yes, from apps that allow it, but a native app on the Apple TV is more stable, and your phone stays free.
Does it work on an iPhone and iPad too?
Yes. iOS and iPadOS have the same players. Just remember a single-screen plan streams to one gadget at a time.
Which IPTV Apple TV app handles replay best?
IPTV Smarters Pro. Catch-up gets its own tile, and programs you can replay are marked in the guide. GSE’s replay support depends on the version you get. On Premium 4K you can go back three days, on Lifetime Max seven.
Can I use an M3U link on Apple TV instead of Xtream codes?
You can, in GSE or VLC, but you lose the film and series sections and usually replay as well. Use the Xtream login wherever the app offers it, and keep the M3U link for testing.
How long does it take to get my login?

Can I watch IPTV on Apple TV in another room at the same time?

I have an old black Apple TV with no App Store. Will it work?
Apple TV models before the Apple TV HD have no App Store, so you can’t install a player on them. AirPlay from an iPhone is the only route, and it’s not great for daily use. A current Apple TV or a Fire TV stick is the better buy.
Do I need an Apple TV 4K for the Premium 4K plan?
For the 4K channels, yes, along with a 4K TV. The plan still works on an Apple TV HD; you’ll just watch the FHD versions of each channel.
Is IPTV on Apple TV better than on a Firestick?
The picture is excellent and the remote is better. The Firestick has more app choice, including TiviMate. Either works well.
